Ride Leader Advice

Share your plans in the information tent. Include:

• Planned route/destination and approx distance
• Departure time
• Planned stops (will there be an opportunity to buy food?)
• What sort of pace/who is it suitable for?
• Tracks, roads or mixed terrain?
• Write your name and the ride date at the head of a new list so riders can sign up.

Before you set off:

• Introduce yourself and encourage others to do the same, making sure everyone is aware of who is in the group.
• Check your rider list and amend as appropriate
• Remind riders they are responsible for following the Highway Code and looking after their own children.

• Remind riders it is their responsibility to have a roadworthy bike, a spare inner tube and ICE details .
• Appoint a back marker.

During the Ride

• Ride courteously and set the tone.
• Warn riders of hazards.
• Regroup after junctions and as needed.
• Adjust pace to suit the group.
• Be prepared to shorten, alter or cancel the ride if conditions change.
• Check anyone leaving the ride is happy to continue independently.

If Something Goes Wrong

• Make the scene safe.
• Look after the casualty and the rest of the group.
• Call 999 if required.
• Contact a Committee member if assistance or ICE details are needed.
• Report significant incidents to the Committee (ensure you have contact details for at least two committee members) .

Remember: Your role is to guide the ride, not to guarantee anyone’s safety. Everyone remains responsible for their own riding decisions.
